Multidisciplinary Tumour Board (MDT)

At KD Cancer Centre, every cancer case without exception is reviewed by our Multidisciplinary Tumour Board (MDT) before treatment begins. This means that your treatment plan is not decided by a single doctor alone. It is discussed and agreed upon by a team of specialists, each an expert in their respective field, working together to achieve the best possible outcome for you.

What is a multidisciplinary tumour board?

A multidisciplinary tumour board (MDT), also called a tumour board or cancer conference, is a regular, structured meeting in which specialists from different medical fields review your complete cancer case together. They study your biopsy reports, imaging scans (CT, MRI, PET-CT), blood tests, pathology findings, and your overall health before recommending a personalised treatment plan.

How does the tumour board process work?

Here is what happens when your case is reviewed

01
Referral to the tumour board

Your treating doctor refers your case, along with all reports, scans, and biopsy results.

02
Case presentation

Your case is presented to the full team, your history, symptoms, diagnostic findings, and staging are reviewed.

03
Specialist discussion

Each specialist shares their assessment. Options are weighed: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination.

04
Consensus recommendation

The team reaches an agreed plan, the most effective treatment approach for your specific case, aligned with current international guidelines (NCCN, ESMO, ASCO).

05
Communication to you

Your treating oncologist discusses the MDT recommendation with you and your family in detail, answers your questions, and together you finalise the plan.

FAQS

Do I need to attend the tumour board meeting?

No. The tumour board is a professional medical discussion that takes place before your consultation. Your treating doctor will then share the recommended plan with you during your appointment.

Will I know what the tumour board decided?

Yes, absolutely. Your oncologist will explain the tumour board recommendation to you and your family clearly, in language you understand. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns.

What if I want a second opinion?

An MDT review is itself a form of multi-specialist input. However, if you wish to seek an external second opinion, we fully support and facilitate this. Please speak with your treating doctor.
