Oncology Rehabilitation
Optimising functional recovery through integrated rehabilitation solutions

What is Oncology Rehabilitation?

Oncology Rehabilitation (Onco Rehab) is a specialised, evidence-based programme designed to help cancer patients and survivors regain physical function, manage treatment side effects, and improve their overall quality of life, before, during, and after cancer treatment. In India, cancer incidence is rising rapidly, with over 14 lakh new cases diagnosed each year.

Yet rehabilitation remains an underutilised component of comprehensive cancer care. At KD Cancer Centre, we are committed to changing this, offering structured, holistic prerehabilitation support that aligns with both global best practices and the specific needs of Indian patients and families.

Our Onco Rehab team works alongside your treating oncology team to develop a personalised rehabilitation plan tailored to your diagnosis, treatment stage, and individual goals.

Your onco rehab pathway

We follow a structured, patient-centred approach to ensure you receive the right care at every stage

Step 1: Referral & screening

Your oncologist, surgeon, or treating specialist will refer you to our Onco Rehab programme. Patients may also enquire directly.

Step 2: Comprehensive assessment

A detailed assessment by our multidisciplinary team covers physical function, pain, fatigue, nutritional status, psychological well-being, and daily living activities. Family members are welcome to attend.

Step 3: Personalised rehabilitation plan

A tailored rehabilitation plan is developed, outlining your goals, recommended therapies, frequency of sessions, and expected milestones. All plans are written in simple language and explained in your preferred language.

Step 4: Active rehabilitation

You participate in individual and group therapy sessions, supervised exercise programmes, and patient education workshops. Sessions are scheduled flexibly to accommodate chemotherapy and radiotherapy appointments.

Step 5: Review, maintenance & discharge planning

Your progress is reviewed regularly. As you achieve your goals, we prepare you for independent management with home exercise programmes, self-management strategies, and community resources.

Additionally, our team collaborates closely with speech and language therapists, social workers, and palliative care specialists to provide seamless, integrated support throughout your treatment journey.

FAQS

Do I need to wait until my cancer treatment is complete to begin rehabilitation?

No. Rehabilitation can and should begin as early as possible — ideally before surgery or at the start of chemotherapy. Early intervention leads to better outcomes and helps you tolerate treatment more effectively.

Is oncology rehabilitation covered under health insurance?

Many physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions are covered under standard Indian health insurance policies. Our team can assist you with documentation and insurance liaison. Coverage varies by insurer and policy type.

Can family members accompany me to sessions?

Yes. We strongly encourage family involvement, particularly for the initial assessment and key education sessions. Caregivers are provided with training and guidance to support your rehabilitation at home.

How long does the programme last?

The duration depends on your individual needs and goals. Some patients benefit from a short intervention of 4–6 weeks, while others with complex needs may continue for several months. Your plan will be reviewed and adapted regularly.

Is the programme available for cancer survivors, not just current patients?

Absolutely. Oncology rehabilitation is equally relevant for cancer survivors experiencing long-term effects such as persistent fatigue, lymphoedema, joint stiffness, or deconditioning, even years after completing treatment.
